Tip of the Month March
Wildlife
November can still be a busy month in the garden and is the traditionally the month for garden bonfires, both for the disposal of garden waste and of course for Bonfire night. Please ensure you check bonfires for Hedgehogs and other wildlife as they are a favorite place for winter hibernation. If you dont already own one a birdtable or feeding station (click here) can create a great deal of enjoyment in your garden.
Ponds
Continue to remove fallen leaves and dead or dying stems from lillies and marginal plants from your pond. This prevents the build up of rotting vegetation on the bottom of your pond which can cause harmful toxic build ups in your pond. Monitor your fishes feeding habits and reduce the amount of food you feed them accordingly.
Lawns
Rake any fallen leaves from your lawn and use them in your composter if you have one. If your lawn needs a final cut and there has already been a frost ensure to raise your lawnmowers cutting height.
Plants and Shrubs
If you havent already done so, empty your pots and planters of any summer bedding and replant with spring flowering bulbs or winter bedding. Remember when planting pots and planters with winter bedding to put plenty of plants in as they will not grow and fill out the pots the way summer bedding does. Bulbs represent excellent value for money as they can be used in a variety of ways and will come up year after year.
